Coolamon Shire is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The shire was formed in 1906 and is located approximately 400 kilometres south-west of Sydney.

Indigenous History

The local indigenous peoples of the Coolamon Shire region are the Wiradjuri people, who have inhabited the area for thousands of years. The Wiradjuri people had a complex system of social organisation, a rich cultural life, and a profound understanding and respect for the land.

The Wiradjuri people were forced off their lands during the 19th century as a result of white settlement and the establishment of sheep grazing. European settlers began to move into the area in the mid-19th century, with the town of Coolamon founded in 1883.

Early European Settlement

Early European settlement of the area focused on sheep grazing, with large pastoral stations being established throughout the region. The town of Coolamon grew rapidly in the early 20th century due to the development of the railway, which made transportation of goods to and from the town much easier. The railway also helped to stimulate the growth of other nearby towns such as Ganmain and Ardlethan.
